University-industry partnerships for large-scale, complex and critical research and innovation endeavours

University-industry partnerships for large-scale, complex and critical research and innovation endeavours

Tomas Coates Ulrichsen, Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Policy, University of Cambridge

There is a growing trend for large, research intensive companies towards forming larger-scale, longer term university-industry collaborations of different types to address increasingly large, complex and multi-disciplinary industrial innovation challenges. These enable firms to draw upon different types and combinations of resources, expertise and competences.

The session focuses on better understanding the different partnership models by which firms and universities can work together to address these types of innovation challenges. It will critically examine when and why different models become appropriate and the management practices/processes that underpin success. It will consider implications for government programmes and for university and firm support and practices.
