Managing university-industry innovation networks

Managing university-industry innovation networks

Dr Lawrence Dooley, University College Cork

University-industry innovation networks provide a critical mass of complementary resources to support scientific discovery within strategically targeted domains, together with inter-organisational capabilities to support translation of discovery knowledge from the lab-bench to the bedside for stakeholder benefit. The interaction offers potential opportunity at both the exploration and exploitation phase of the innovation process but also brings with it network challenges unique to the university-industry context since achieving effective integration between these institutions is notoriously difficult. Despite the significant growth in study of inter-organisational collaborations and the gradual shift in unit of analysis from the dyad of the organisational partners to the holistic network, more study at the level of network is required to understand the structures, governance and management routines necessary to nurture these university-industry 'networks of learning'.
