Technological convergence – implications for innovation systems and policy

Dr Mihail Roco, Senior Advisor for Science and Engineering in U.S. National Science Foundation

The phenomenon of ‘technological convergence’ was brought to prominence in 2002 in a report  by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). Today, the threats and opportunities associated with technological convergence are of interest to many governments, due to their strategic impact and policy significance for national innovation systems. However, there are a lack of coherent frameworks and practical methods for understanding and dealing with technological convergence. Contributions to both theory and practice that address these challenges are welcome.
